The Kia will likely be replaced in 2020. I like the idea of a K900 or Cadenza, but likely the replacement will be a 2019 Kia Forte or 2019 VW Jetta.
What can Oppo tell me about the 1.4 Manual Jetta?

It’s your wife’s Golf in sedan form now. IMO the 1.4 is kind of fun. It actually matches the peak torque of the 1.8, but 100 rpm sooner. I had a previous gen Jetta with the 1.4, and I loved the gas mileage. The VW manuals suck stock though.

It’s a Volkswagen, and Volkswagen is an evil company (see: diesel emissions testing on humans and apes, executives making holocaust jokes when talking about profits, etc etc etc). Therefore I won’t even consider buying a VW. Or an Audi.

My brother in law has an automatic 2019. It’s been in the shop twice for warranty repairs, although I’d have to call him to see what they were. His wife drives it back and forth to work. I’ve asked them both how they like it, and the basic response is that it’s a car, and they expect it to be at the dealer for some sort of repair at least once/year.
He has previous VW experience with his daughter’s 2013 GLI (blown engine, many issues with that one) , and his Golf R (traded in for the Jetta), so he knows what he’s in for with VW ownership.

I could argue the 1.4 TSI in theory should be a longer-lived, less problematic engine than the 1.8 and 2.0s from the EA888 family.
The 1.4 is older block architecture with a timing belt. Before you bolt just at the mention of a timing belt, hear me out. Despite people thinking timing chains never go bad, they do... and sometimes with little to no warning, especially on overhead cam engines. And it’s not just a VW/Audi or BMW thing. There are a number of Toyota and Lexus engines that have had their issues in recent years as well, though some may have been due to lack of maintenance.
Anyway, there are other things nice about the older block architecture as far as reliability. It uses a timing belt driven water pump, which seems to be much more reliable than the water pump the EA888 family uses, which when I worked at a VW dealer I had to replace a number of them on GTIs with less than 10,000 miles on the clock...
The 1.4 also uses the old style rear main seal, which is generally very reliable. The EA888 family uses a similar teflon seal, but it’s simply glued to a stamped steel housing and many of them literally come unbonded, not only making an oil leak, but also a vacuum leak that sets a check engine light for lean mixture.
In all, I don’t think the 1.4 is a bad buy. Should get fantastic fuel economy and won’t be ungodly slow. Won’t be fast either, but a perfectly adequate daily driver.

Fair enough. I do think that looking into CPO midsizes rather than new compacts could be a decent idea though, especially since they’d probably be only a year old with very few miles for the same money.
Here’s a 2018 Mazda6 turbo with 1700 miles for US$24,882, which is at least vaguely in the ballpark. I don’t know what the market is like in Canada though.

I am certain the Jetta will be a more enjoyable ride than your bbbbbbase Forte. But a Kia or Hyundai would be a safer bet.

I’d get the Jetta. Phenomenal MPG. E asier to resale, especially with a stick . I dunno any used car buyers that specifically want a Forte, they just end up in one cuz it was a good deal. VW however actually has a following. In 5 years the Jetta interior will probably be in pretty good shape while the Forte will probably rattle and creak like mad. It’s also the difference of a company that has been doing this 80+ years and a company that came here 30 years ago with the only goal to be the Walmart brand alternative. Give your money to the company with genuine soul and heritage and not the "compare to" generic company.

Depending on how far into 2020 you do it, you may be able to find a 2019 used Mazda 3 if you look hard enough. I had a 2019 Jetta rental recently (auto) and I thought it was awful. I drove it the same day as a Mazda 3 and it was like comparing a Malibu to a Base 3 S eries. The Mazda interior is just a MUCH nicer place to be. There’s a Mazda3 sedan near me with 6k miles for 19k.
The one redeemable thing about the Jetta was the infotainment. It’s really quick to pick up because all you need is Android Auto. Plug that in and just let the rest of the car melt away.

I will second on timing chains. On the 4b11t motors from Mitsubish i they fail with little notice. I think that goes for that whole family of ‘world engines’ which goes across to Hyundai/Dodge. They’re super finicky with dirty oil.

GM ECOTecs have chain failures too among many other engines. As a technician seeing pattern failures with timing chain equipped engines, some of them before they even get to 100,000 miles, I have to really question the hate that timing belts receive.
From my point of view, I love them. I simply replace them and all the components they touch (water pump if driven by the timing belt, all the rollers and tensioner) when the manufacturer recommends and drive more, worry less. Just by simply following the manufacturer’s guidelines on maintenance I can make many engines last indefinitely well above 200,000 miles. Most modern timing belts go 100,000 miles or more with their specified interval anyway.
The way I try to explain it to people is this:
Would you rather have an engine with a timing belt
you could guarantee goes over 300,000 miles by just following the manufacturer’s recommendations on maintenance...
OR
An engine with a “lifetime” timing chain that might not make it past 150,000 miles and be much more expensive and complicated to repair when the timing chain system does need to be replaced?
I love timing belts, I really do... mostly because I’m a cheap ass who owns old, crazy high mileage vehicles. I don’t worry about my timing belt vehicles having a sudden failure because I’ve replaced the belt and related components when recommended and with quality parts. Keep good oil in them and keep on top of whatever little things happen to crop up as you go along and what do ya know? The little buggers just keep going and I don’t fret about being stranded, even in my 300,000 mile cars.

I replaced my 1992 Mercedes 190E with a 2019 Jetta S 6MT. My first time driving a standard shift was the test drive and I stalled a lot. The hill hold was nice at first as it saved me from crashing into other car via rolling backwards several times when I would stall on hills. Now that I know how to drive a shift, the hill hold is annoying.
I average 42 MPG from the car in mixed driving. The 1.4T seems to be a decent motor, but it sounds like a hairdryer when you rev it out and really it prefers to be driven like it’s a diesel.
Chassis is alright, not as glued to the pavement as the 190E, but still light on it s feet. The trailing arm rear end can get a bit choppy on well rutted surfaces. Ride is smooth but a bit floaty, I’m thinking of getting H&R sport springs plus Koni yellows to tackle the float.
The shifter feels rubbery, and first is difficult to engage if moving at all until the trans is broken in. The clutch is quite loud on engagement as well, but I’ll take it over the Darth Vader breathing noises that all of the early build automatics had when the TC would lock (I test drove an auto for an hour before buying the 6MT).
Note that the base model does not have heated mirrors unless you get the $400 driver assistance package. Note that if you have the driver assistance package, and your alignment throws the sensors out of tolerance, the alignment plus calibrations cost roughly $700.
I change my oil every 5k miles, these cars take a new VW 508 approval code oil which is dyed green. The oil is dark by 5k miles and smells burnt.
I also hit a deer with mine on the highway 2 days after purchase. The deer went under the car, resulting in $3500 of damage, but the car was still drivable after impact.
For the $16102 I paid for the car itself ($18213 OTD after tax/title/reg - bought new with 52 miles ), it’s pretty good. Interior is plasticy, but dash and parts of the door panels are soft touch. Android Auto also works phenomenally well on my Google pixel with the headunit.
I now have 20,000 miles and there are no squeaks, rattles, or other nonsense.

Fellow MQB platform here, the new Jetta is awesome. I don’t know what your budget looks like but if you’re looking towards a brand new car for cheap, than tbh the current Jetta will be waaaayyy more rewarding than either the Hyundai or Kia. It will require premium (since it’s a turbo) but Volkswagen knows how to make a manual transmission, and turbo engines rein s upreme throughout their lineup. Also, it gives it a way higher ceiling for upgrades than the Kia or Hyundai. Overall, would heavily push you towards the new Jetta.
